React and Next.js Performance

A prioritized rulebook of about 70 React and Next.js performance rules in 8 categories (async waterfalls, bundle size, server components and caching, re-renders, rendering, effects, etc.), each in its own rules/ file with incorrect vs correct code. The agent applies them when writing, reviewing or refactoring React/Next.js code.

Editorial assessment

This is a source-only assessment. It does not claim runtime or security testing.

What it does

A ranked catalog of about 70 React and Next.js performance rules the agent consults while writing or reviewing code. Ranking waterfalls and bundle size above re-render tuning points it at the biggest wins first.

Best for

  • Reviewing a Next.js App Router codebase for sequential awaits, oversized client bundles or heavy RSC props
  • Writing new server components and data fetching code
  • Refactoring client components that re-render more than needed

Strengths in the source

  • Orders 8 categories by impact, from 'Eliminating Waterfalls' and 'Bundle Size' (CRITICAL) down to advanced patterns (LOW), so findings can be triaged by priority.
  • Each rule lives in its own rules/ file with an incorrect and a correct code example, and a compiled AGENTS.md holds the full set.
  • Includes correctness rules beyond speed, such as authenticating server actions like API routes and avoiding module-level mutable request state in RSC/SSR.

Limitations

  • The repository has no LICENSE file (MIT is declared only in frontmatter and the README), so Retenta links to the source rather than hosting a copy.
  • Some rules recommend specific libraries, such as better-all for dependency-based parallelism and SWR for client fetching, which may not match a project's stack.
  • Tied to current React and Next.js APIs (after(), Activity, useEffectEvent); rules can go stale as those frameworks change.

When not to use it

  • React apps outside Next.js where the server, caching and next/dynamic rules do not apply
  • Code where correctness or readability matters more than micro-optimization, given the low-impact JavaScript rules

Install from the source

Clones the current default branch, which may be newer than the reviewed revision 063bee9. The destination shown is Claude Code's personal skills folder; other agents read the same folder from their own skills directory. Declared MIT in the repository README, but the repository has no LICENSE file to reproduce, so Retenta links to the source instead of hosting a copy.
