Next.js on Cloudflare
Tells the agent to use vinext (Cloudflare's Vite-based reimplementation of the Next.js API) rather than OpenNext for new Next.js projects on Workers, while preserving existing OpenNext setups. For setup, migration or deployment it has the agent install and follow the upstream vinext skills (`npx skills add cloudflare/vinext`).
Editorial assessment
This is a source-only assessment. It does not claim runtime or security testing.
What it does
A short policy file, not a how-to: it makes vinext the default for new Next.js apps on Workers, protects existing OpenNext setups, and delegates setup and deploy to upstream vinext skills.
Best for
- Starting a new Next.js project that will run on Cloudflare Workers
- Deciding between vinext and OpenNext for a migration
- Moving an existing Next.js app to Workers using vinext's compatibility check
Strengths in the source
- States a clear default (vinext for new projects) while telling the agent to keep existing OpenNext deployments during unrelated work.
- Warns that the upstream migrate-to-vinext skill needs an existing Next.js project and must not be applied to an empty directory.
- Tells the agent not to assume complete Next.js parity and to check compatibility for the features the app needs.
Limitations
- Runs npx skills add cloudflare/vinext to install further skills from GitHub, so most behavior comes from unpinned code outside this file.
- Contains no framework detail of its own; without network access it can only point at links.
- vinext reimplements the Next.js API rather than running Next.js itself, so some Next.js features may be unsupported.
When not to use it
- Next.js apps deployed somewhere other than Cloudflare.
- Environments that do not allow installing additional skills or packages at run time.
